The 2026 season proved to be another highly successful and enjoyable year for the Collegians Golf Society, with strong participation, excellent golf, and plenty of camaraderie throughout the programme of events.
Annual Challenge Match v Inst at Belvoir Golf Club
The season's inter-school rivalry was renewed on Thursday 7 May 2026 when Collegians faced Old Rivals Inst in the annual challenge match at Belvoir Golf Club. Played in excellent spirit and on a course presented in superb condition, the match provided a fitting showcase for both societies.
In a closely contested encounter, Collegians emerged victorious by 5 matches to 4, securing bragging rights for another year. The hospitality from Belvoir Golf Club was outstanding and, as always, the fellowship and friendly rivalry between the players contributed greatly to an enjoyable day.
The individual highlight was the competition for the prestigious Miscampbell Cup, which was won by Chris Doyle with an excellent score of 43 points, edging out Geoff Clarke on count-back after both finished level.
Visitors' Day at Carnalea Golf Club
Visitors' Day took place on Friday 19 June 2026 at Carnalea Golf Club and proved to be one of the highlights of the season. Society Captain Tony Emsley welcomed a mix of new and longstanding Collegians members, together with visitors, creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day.
Members enjoyed a wonderful combination of excellent golf, fine food and great company, all set against the backdrop of a superbly presented course. The event once again underlined the Society's commitment to fostering friendships and maintaining connections among former pupils and guests.
The day's standout performer was Ryan Hay, the Society's Honorary Secretary, who claimed overall victory and lifted the historic Sir Thomas McMullan Trophy, a trophy with a distinguished history dating back to 1933.
Captain's Day at Malone Golf Club
The Society's final major event of the year was Captain's Day 2026 at Malone Golf Club on Friday 28th August 2026. Captain Tony Emsley's event attracted an impressive field of 55 golfers, reflecting the continued strength and popularity of the Society.
Players were treated to a course in outstanding condition and incredible weather. The day was characterised by the excellent food, friendship and good humour that have become hallmarks of Collegians Golf Society events. Competition on the course was fierce, with Darryl Sloan emerging as the overall winner with an excellent score of 38 points. Congratulations are extended to Darryl and all prize winners.
Appreciation of the Honorary Secretary
Ryan Hay's dedication as Honorary Secretary continues to be instrumental to the success of the Collegians Golf Society. Behind every successful outing lies a significant amount of planning, organisation and communication, and Ryan's efforts throughout the year ensured that each event ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all who attended. From coordinating venues and entries to managing the many administrative details that often go unseen, his commitment and attention to detail have been exceptional.
Those who are part of the Society and have attended the events throughout the season greatly appreciate the time, energy and enthusiasm Ryan invests on behalf of the society. His hard work helps create the welcoming atmosphere, strong camaraderie and sense of community that make Collegians Golf Society such a success. It was particularly fitting that Ryan's efforts were recognised on the course as well, with his victory at Visitors' Day and the lifting of the historic Sir Thomas McMullan Trophy. On behalf of all took part this year, sincere thanks are extended to Ryan for his outstanding service and commitment to the Society.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 season was a fitting conclusion to Tony Emsley's year as Captain. As the Society looks forward to 2027, Richard Finlay will take over as Captain and lead the next chapter of Collegians Golf Society. The Society continues to welcome new members and looks forward to another year of competitive golf, friendship and fellowship.
