Methody Collegians marked a significant milestone on Friday night with the launch of their first event on Scottish soil, bringing together around 50 former pupils in Edinburgh for an evening of reconnecting, conversation and shared history.
Alumni spanning several decades gathered for drinks and supper, united by their common connection to Methodist College Belfast. The atmosphere on the night reflected the strength of that bond, with old friendships rekindled, new connections formed and a clear sense of belonging among those present.
The event was hosted as part of a renewed drive to revitalise the College’s alumni association, Methody Collegians. Speaking on the evening, Judith Cochrane (Class of 1994), the current President of the association, reflected on the organisation’s recent transformation, describing a clear ambition to build a vibrant, inclusive community that actively engages alumni of all ages while maintaining strong links with the College itself.
Central to that vision is the belief that alumni networks can have a meaningful, practical impact. This can range from social connection and friendship to mentoring, professional opportunities and support for those relocating to new cities. Recent examples shared with attendees included assistance with student placements, career opportunities, help with relocation abroad and quiet acts of support when members needed help most.
In parallel with growing engagement, Methody Collegians have expanded their programme of activities. These have included quarterly lunches, a Collegians’ Choir at Christmas, the formal launch of the Collegians Business Network, an annual black-tie dinner and support for year reunions. A new website and membership portal also allows members to connect more easily with others from their year group, profession or shared interests.
While support for the College remains an important part of the association’s role, the current Principal, Mrs Jenny Lendrum emphasised that the Edinburgh gathering was not about fundraising, but about recognising and strengthening the Methody presence in Scotland.
The success of the evening was particularly welcome given the challenges of launching new events and encouraging attendance. Any initial concerns quickly faded as the venue filled with lively discussion and familiar camaraderie. There was a palpable buzz in the room, with Brian Duffin (Class of 1972) reuniting with Brian Kinkead (Class of 1971), having not seen each other for 50 years. One of our Class of 2021, Kashyap Kada, who is undertaking a Masters in engineering, made a great connection with Roger Pim, (Class of 1994), who works in the renewable energy field, and who could be a great mentor to Kashyap. Assistant Principal Teacher, Stephen Lindsay (Class of 2001), also brought some fun to the proceedings with a 'Where is this in Methody?' quiz.

All in all, it was a great first Scottish event and stands as a clear signal of renewed momentum within Methody Collegians and a reminder of the lasting connections formed at 1 Malone Road.
Following the positive response in Edinburgh, Methody Collegians will continue their programme of regional events.
The next alumni catch-up is scheduled to take place in London on Friday 20th February.
